VASE PROPOSAL
by VALERIA
FLORESCANO.
This proposal has its premises upon the principles
of the “rotoreliefs” or optical discs that Marcel Duchamp
developed in 1935. Duchamp observed that concentric circles, when rotated
at a certain speed produce the illusion of depth.
I am applying this idea to the making of my proposals, taking in consideration
that while the glass is being worked in the pipe, the base “acts“
as a rotorelief. By this I mean that when one rotates the design, the
base gains volume and depth.
This is not acquired in glass by simply making “optical twists”.
For our vases, we will apply threads and wider strips of color which
will help us draw the circles, elipses and/or spirals that start in
the bottom of the vase, but at some point by offcentering the design
we will trigger the “optical effect” and with this we will
have a bidimentional drawing that will look like a tridimensional form,
therefore we will have a trompe-l'oeil of two “volumes”
in one.
The design unfolds up on to the walls of the vase, and cover its real
tridimentional structure. This “texture” will emphasize
a strong offcentered movement going upward. I am sending six designs,
that are a variation of the same “principle” for you to
choose.
SHAPE: It is a classic cone shaped
vase, I chose it, because this clean shape is a circle in volume and
relates me to the rotoreliefs, but it is also modern at the same time.
The bigger area of the base will let us play more with the designs.
SIZE: Tall:
23 cms, Base: 20 cms. ø Mouth:10 cms.
COLORS: We will use opaque and translucent
glass. As for color combinations we will have all opaque pieces, all
transparent ones as well as combinations of both; opaque and transparent
glass. Our palette will reflect elegance and colorfulness, while we
will be using black, gray, white, clear and red glass. (see enclosed
color palette and combinations
). This 9 colors will give us enough combinations for our 130 centerpieces:
Rose
red R-149, Eco Black R-540, Pigeon Grey G-108, Dense White Z-74, Light
Koper Ruby Z-651, Black G-50, Smokey Gray R-233, Opaline White Z-740,
clear glass.
(see Olympic
Color Rods )
TECHNIQUE: Hand made, glass blown in a
mold.
FINISHINGS: The vase will be torch
cut and coldworked at the area of the mouth.
